How to write a media release

Tips

Tip 1: Make it sound exciting
Tip 2: Keep it to one page
Tip 3: Make sure your contact details include after hours numbers too
Tip 4: Use quotes - journalists love quoting other people

Structure

At the top of the page you should use your organisation logo if you have one. It is also usual to head the page "Media Release" or "Press Release" and the date on which the release is made.

Your opening sentence should include the basics - who, what, when, where.

Your next sentences can be the why, or include more details about something in the first sentence.

Then use a quote or two.

Now you can flesh out some information about your event.

Finish off with some background information about your organisation, and contact or booking details for the event.

At the bottom of the page include your contact details in case the media outlets want some more information.

The Armidale Kiteflying Club will be holding their annual kite building competition in Central Park this Saturday from 9am.

Young people aged 12 - 18 are invited to enter for a chance to win prizes of up to $1000.

Money raised during this year's event will be donated to the Armidale Philatelist Association.

"This year's event is set to be bigger than ever with over 100 entrants so far," said Sunny Day, the organiser of this year's event.

"We have chosen the Philatelist's Club as the recipient of this year's fundraising because they have recognised a severe downturn in the interest in stamp collecting in Armidale over the past year," Mrs Day said.

An entry fee of $15 is required up front for those wanting to enter, but all materials will be provided on the day.

The kite building competition is currently in its 17th year, with money raised going to a different worthy cause annually.

Anyone wanting to enter should contact Sunny Day on (02) 5555 5555.
